This list type is designed for mailing lists that publish announcements (i.e., one-way information flow) containing potentially sensitive information privately to a select group of subscribers, so it is atypical of the Kavi® Mailing List Manager default list types, most of which are designed to support interactive discussion groups.

Since the Announce Only list type is private, it employs the closed subscription model. In this model, no one can subscribe via email. If the 'List Availability' option is set to 'Members' when the list is created, authenticated users will be able to subscribe through Member pages. If this option is set to 'Administrators only', members will not be able to access the list through Member pages, but the list will be available to administrators through Admin pages, so subscribers will be added to the list "by invitation only."

This list uses the most restrictive type of posting access configuration (i.e., the -moU combination is set in the ezmlm-make argument string). This restricts posting so that all posts are moderated and only moderators are allowed to post. Posts from addresses that aren't on the Moderator List are automatically rejected.

The Newsletter default list type uses the same -moU configuration, but instead of having private, closed subscriptions, the Newsletter list type is open to public subscription requests.

Keeping a list closed to public posts offers significant protection of content, but even legitimate subscribers have been known to post inappropriate messages on occasion, so use this list type when the need to prevent inappropriate messages from being posted doesn't justify the effort required to moderate the list.

Moderation is the only way to be sure that inappropriate content is not posted to a list, but it takes time and effort to moderate a list, so use this type when the benefit of preventing inappropriate messages from being posted justifies the maintenance costs.

Lists based on this type accept public subscription requests and allow the public to access the raw archives via ezmlm address commands.

It uses the -mOU combination in the ezmlm-make argument string, so lists of this type make no distinction of subscriber level and view all posts as public. All posts are also moderated. The poster list is irrelevant in this configuration and will be ignored. Since the list is moderated, at least one moderator should be designated when you add a list of this type.

Because it is completely public and unmoderated, control over the content of postings is limited to whatever screening is enforced for all incoming email (e.g., screening out viruses and obvious spam and possibly email that contains words on the 'bad-words list').
