Kavi Mailing List Manager Help
Table of Contents
The Edit a List Type tool is used to edit an existing mailing list type. List types function as templates for the organization's mailing lists. A mailing list is configured according to the list type on which it is based. Editing a list type is not necessarily a simple or straightforward operation, particularly if there are already lists using the list type.
Important
Editing a list type will affect the configuration of every mailing list based on this list type. The 'Existing Lists' field displays those lists that will be automatically updated to match the new list type settings. Before editing an option, you should look up the option you plan to edit in Changing list type options.
If you are not already an expert on list types, you should read List Types before using this tool.
The Kavi Mailing List Manager uses ezmlm-supported mailing lists and exposes the ezmlm-make argument string for use by individuals who have acquired expertise with ezmlm. For a list of arguments and simple descriptions, see Ezmlm Quick Reference Guide. This information is presented for quick reference only and does not describe the arguments in depth, nor does it fully describe the configuration or behavior of lists based on any particular list type as other layers in the application may override or supplement behavior configured through the ezmlm-make argument string. Direct manipulation of this string is for experts only and is outside the scope of this documentation. The full array of ezmlm configuration options is documented on the ezmlm site: www.ezmlm.org.
Back to topA tabular list of all existing list types is displayed. Select the list type you wish to edit and click Edit. If you accessed this tool from the Manage List Types page, this step will have already been performed.
Edit the list type name and description, and make any edits you wish to configuration options through the available fields, or if you are an expert on ezmlm and would like to edit the ezmlm-make arguments string directly, proceed to the Preview step where the string is exposed. Whichever approach you choose, be sure to review the 'Existing Lists' field to see which lists will be automatically updated to match the new list type settings. When you are ready, click Preview to review the revised list type configuration settings (or edit the ezmlm-make arguments string) before committing your edits.
The ezmlm-make arguments field allows ezmlm experts to manually set the argument string for ezmlm-make. The applicable ezmlm codes are displayed in parentheses following each configuration option. Kavi Mailing List Manager does not provide all available ezmlm options on the Edit step.

- Anyone can post (MU)
Select this option if lists of this type should immediately post any email sent to them, regardless of the originator's list user level.

- Only moderators can post (mo)
Select this option if only moderators should be allowed to post to lists of this type. This is the most restrictive type of list.
- List Archives
-
These settings apply to raw email-based archives only, as opposed to archives that have been processed for publication on the web site. For more information, see archives in the List Features document.
- Do not archive list messages (A)
Select this option to optimize performance if lists of this type will not need archives. If this option is selected, the list will not have archives of any kind.
- Messages archived for moderator retrieval only (ab)
Select this option if the archives for lists of this type should be viewable to moderators only. This is the most restrictive setting.
- Messages archived for subscriber retrieval (aBg)
Select this option if lists of this type should have archives accessible to subscribers as well as moderators.
- Messages archived for public retrieval (aBG)
Select this option if lists of this type should have publicly-accessible archives. This is the least restrictive setting, as the archives can be viewed by anyone.
- Instant Archiving
-
Configure whether new postings will be added immediately or periodically to the web-accessible HTML archives for this list. This setting is dependent on the existence of archives (i.e., the -a switch is set). If archives do not exist, this setting will be ignored.
- Archive incoming messages at arrival (i)
Select this option if lists of this type should have new postings added instantly to the web-viewable archives. This option is generally recommended so that email threads in the web-viewable archives are kept current.
- Archive messages periodically (I)
Select this option if lists of this type should have new postings added periodically to the web-viewable archives. The default interval for periodic updating is one hour.
- Add a prefix to the subject line

Select this option if email from this type of list should have a prefix automatically added to the subject line.
- No, do NOT add a prefix to subject lines (F)
Select this option if email from this type of list should not have a prefix automatically added to the subject line.

-
Select whether lists of this type should have a trailer automatically appended to each email before posting. For more information, see Trailer Text in the List Features document.

- No, do NOT add trailing text to the end of each message (T)

- Public subscription requests
-
Select whether lists of this type will accept emailed administrative requests from the public; such as requests to subscribe or unsubscribe, to view the list's archives or to be sent the list's email help commands. Most lists are public, and allow anyone to subscribe or unsubscribe. On non-public lists, only an administrator can subscribe or unsubscribe a user. For more information, see public subscription requests in the List Features document.
- Yes, respond to public subscribe/unsubscribe requests (p)
Select this option if lists of this type will respond to administrative requests from users, such as emailed requests to subscribe or unsubscribe. Even if this option is selected, the user will receive an email confirmation request that must be returned to the organization before the request will be fulfilled.
- No, do NOT respond to public subscribe/unsubscribe request (P)
Select this option if lists of this type will only admins to add new users, and ignore email subscription requests from from public sources.
- Allow Attachments
-
Select whether lists of this type will accept email with MIME attachments or not. For most lists, set this value to 'Yes' to allow MIME content such as non-English character sets and binary files. If this is set to 'No', only plain text (i.e., 7-bit US-ASCII characters) email messages will be accepted.
Although there are costs associated with allowing MIME attachments that are not incurred when only plain text is allowed (e.g., email with MIME attachments have larger file sizes than plain-text email, binary files have to be managed to guard against possible malicious content, etc.), limiting a list to plain-text email only is so restrictive that this alternative is only suitable for certain types of lists (e.g., private lists used by administrators or moderators communicating in a Western European language that uses the Roman alphabet).
- Yes, allow MIME attachments (X)
Select this option if lists of this type will accept email of non-text MIME types.
- No, allow only plain text messages (x)
Select this option if lists of this type will only accept plain text 7-bit US-ASCII email and automatically reject all other MIME type content. Lists of this type will not be able to handle non-English characters or binary files such as graphics, and will be restricted to users communicating in a Western European language that uses the Roman alphabet.
- Scan for Viruses
-
This configuration option controls whether F-Prot virus protection will be enabled for lists of this type. As mentioned in the discussion of the 'Allow Attachments' option, virus protection is especially important for list types that allow MIME attachments. For more information, see Virus Scanning in the Concepts section.
- Yes, enable virus scanning of incoming messages (z)
Select this option to have email and attachments sent to lists of this type scanned for viruses and other types of malware (e.g. worms, trojans, spyware, etc.). This option is generally recommended.
- No, disable virus scanning (Z)
Select this option if lists of this type do not require virus scanning. This option is generally used only when the 'Allow Attachments' option is set to 'No', so that the list only handles plain US-ASCII text files.
The preview step gives you an opportunity to check your configuration settings. An experts-only "ezmlm-make Arguments" field shows any configuration options selected on the previous step and allows you to add any additional ezmlm options you need. If you are satisfied with the settings for your new mailing list type, click Save.
Your mailing list type has been edited, and your final edits (including any edits performed on the ezmlm-make argument string in the previous step) are displayed. If you want to edit another list type, click Edit Another.
