Kavi® Members Help
Table of Contents
The Add a Company Type tool is used to create custom Company Types including types assigned through memberships, types assigned to staff companies and general types that group and classify companies in ways that are useful to the organization.
If you aren't familiar with the way that roles and types are used to confer access to Kavi Members tools and other areas of the Web site, you should study the Concepts documents on Roles, Types and Access before using this tool. If you aren't certain how the different classes of types are applied, see the Concepts documents on Company Types, Company Administration and Contact Types and User Types.
Important
Since roles associated with a Company Type are inherited by every user who belongs to a company that has been assigned that type, Company Types are rarely associated with roles that grant administrative or editorial access privileges. Exercise caution when creating Company Types with these kinds of privileges. For more information, refer to Assigning roles to Company Types.
The Concepts documents include a chapter on Company Types that you should read before creating a Company Type for the first time. Here are some links to sections of that document that provide some hopefully helpful hints about creating specific kinds of Company Types.
Add Company Types to be assigned to member companies through membership.
Add Company Types to be assigned to staff companies.
General Company Types may be created without any associated roles to define a group of companies sharing some common characteristic, such as area of interest or geographic region. Once you've created this Company Type, you can quickly retrieve all members of the group by performing a search based on this type through the Company Data Report or other tool.
Provide a name, description and category for the Company Type you want to add, designate this type as default or not, and select any roles that should be conferred through this type.
- Name
-
The name of the type.
Important
This name must be unique.
It is recommended that type names be capitalized as proper nouns to differentiate them from roles with similar names. Capitalized names also display nicely in reports.
- Description
A short textual description of the type. If this type conveys any access, the description should include this information (e.g., 'Conveys access to Members and Board areas.').
- Associated Roles
-
Select zero or more roles for your new type.
Note
A type is not required to have roles associated with it. Custom types can be used as a convenient way to group users or companies according to type, and in these cases it may not be necessary to provide privileges through this type.
- Category
-
The category assigned to a Company Type or User Type determines how and where the type will be displayed on tool pages. The default categories are: 'general', 'general (with membership only)', 'admin' and 'editor'.
If you are adding or editing a type and aren't sure how to categorize it:
If the type is assigned through memberhip, it belongs in the category 'general (with membership only)'.
If the type isn't assigned through membership and doesn't confer roles that grant editor or admin privileges, it belongs in the category 'general'.
If the type isn't assigned through membership and confers roles that grant admin privileges, it belongs in the category 'admin'.
If the type isn't assigned through membership and confers roles that grant editor privileges but not admin privileges, it belongs in the category 'editor'.
- general
A category assigned to a type to indicate that this type has only a basic level of access to the organization's Web site. The 'general' category is assigned to types which are not associated with the 'editor' or 'admin' roles; and which are acquired by being assigned to users regardless of membership status, rather than types acquired only through membership.
- general (with membership only)
This category is assigned to types that are acquired only through membership. It generally confers at least one role (such as the default role 'member') that grants access to Member areas of the Web site. Types assigned through membership rarely confer privileged roles such as those that grant Admin tools or Kavi Edit access.
- admin
This category is assigned to types that confer roles which grant administrative access. Types in this category should be assigned only to privileged users who need access to Admin tools. These types are displayed in the 'Administrative Access' section of tool pages. They do not appear in the list of types that can be granted through membership when defining Membership Types.
- editor
This category is assigned to types that confer roles which grant Kavi Edit access. These include types such as Organization Editor that convey the default 'Editor' role (which grants the user permission to edit all areas of the Web site and to define custom Editor Types with more limited privileges) or a custom Editor Type whose role is generated automatically to provide Kavi Edit access to the set of pages specified by the Organization Editor when the type was defined. Editor Types are displayed in the 'Kavi Edit Access' section of tool pages. They do not appear in the list of types that can be granted through membership when defining Membership Types.
- Auto-Assign
Select this option if you would like this type to be automatically assigned to new companies that submit membership applications online. This option will also be preselected for companies added through the Add a Company tool and applied by default to companies added through the Upload Data tool, although administrators can override the default when adding companies individually or through batch uploads.
