Kavi Mailing List Manager Help

Appendix L. Subscriber Types

Overview

There are four subscriber types available in Kavi® Mailing List Manager, but only two types are visible to regular members: Regular Subscriber and Digest Subscriber. These types give subscribers the option of receiving every message posted to a list as an individual email, or receiving multiple messages distilled into a single email (i.e., a digest ).

The other two types of subscribers, Posters and Moderators, are specially privileged types. Ironically, even though these are subscriber types, users assigned these types must also be subscribed as either regular or digest subscribers to receive messages posted to the list.

The four subscriber types

Regular Subscriber

A user who is subscribed as a regular subscriber is forwarded every individual email message that is sent to the list.

Digest Subscriber

A user who is subscribed as a digest subscriber is sent a digest of email messages in batch format, with many email rolled into one. By default, a digest subscriber receives the emailed digest after 30 messages, 48 hours or 64 KB of message body text have accumulated since the last digest.

Poster

A public user's email address is added to the Poster List (also called the Allow List) to grant them the same posting privileges as a subscriber. This may be a user who is subscribed under their primary address and would like to post under an alternate address, a staff member who isn't allowed to subscribe but needs to be able to post, or a trusted member of the public.

The Poster List only applies to lists where the underlying list type is configured to grant direct posting privileges to subscribers but reject public posts or send them for moderation. There are only two default list types with this type of configuration: the 'Closed Private Discussion Group' and 'Moderated Private Discussion Group'. On lists configured to allow all users to post directly or to moderate all messages, the Poster List is ignored.

Users may be added to the Poster List by administrators. If this is a moderated list, moderators can also add posters.

This list is entirely distinct from the subscriber lists, so users subscribed as posters must also be subscribed as either regular or digest subscribers in order to receive the list messages.

Moderator

A user who is subscribed as a moderator is a privileged user responsible for reviewing messages submitted to the list to ensure that unwanted email do not get posted to the list. Depending on list configuration, moderators may also moderate subscription requests. Moderators can always post, although their posts may be sent for moderation. For more information, see List Moderation.

Users subscribed as posters should also be subscribed as either regular or digest subscribers in order to receive the list messages.
