Chapter 2. Managing Companies and Users

Overview

One of the primary responsibilities of Kavi Members is to manage company and user data for Kavi-hosted Web sites. In Kavi Members, every user must belong to a company, which allows users to be managed effectively as a group.

Kavi Members definition of "company"

Most users on an organization's Web site are representatives of member companies or individual members, but others are staff and administrators. Company representatives are associated with a member company, but "company" may be loosely defined: it may be an academic institution, government bureau or other not-for-profit entity. Other kinds of "companies" don't represent real world entities, but are added solely to group users.

Companies created to group users:

Individual members

If the organization offers memberships to individuals, it needs to add at least one company to group individual members. This kind of company will have the purpose of 'Company for Individuals'. The organization may add more than one of these companies.

Organization staff and administrators

If the organization directly employs staff or administrators, a company can be added to group organization staff. This kind of company will have the purpose of 'Staff and Administration'.

Nonmembers

If the organization tracks nonmember users in its database, it needs to have at least one company to group these users. This kind of company will have the purpose of 'Company for Individuals'. The organization may add more than one of these companies.
